Baku: Baku Steel Company CJSC (BSC), the largest steel producer in the South Caucasus, has completed the first phase of its modernization project at the Azerboru Production Area in Sumgayit city. This initiative is part of the company’s long-term development strategy, aiming to transform Azerboru into a modern, high-tech facility focused on export-oriented products.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the strategic initiatives in seamless steel pipe manufacturing are supported by international certification from the American Petroleum Institute (API) obtained in November 2024. Following an inspection in May 2025, the compliance of manufacturing processes with API standards was confirmed, paving the way for expanding pipe product exports, including to the U.S. market. Additionally, technological upgrades at BSC’s Baku facility during 2024-2025 aimed at improving steel billet quality are significant. Projects include commissioning a Vacuum Degassing Unit, mastering closed cycle billet casting technology, and utilizing modern equipment for alloying elements.
The primary goals of the first phase of Azerboru’s modernization focus on increasing pipe production volume, expanding the product range for local and export markets, and establishing a technological base for future development. BSC aims to enter markets with high-tech products offering added value, distinguishing itself in the region. Partners from Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, India, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine have contributed to the project, including Danobat, Lazzari, GH, Karl Deutsch, Nordinkraft, and Prestar.
Significant projects include a major overhaul of the TPA-250 rolling mill, equipment upgrades, and installation of an induction heating system and a new Lazzari straightening machine. These enhancements boost productivity and enable new pipe types. In the protective pipes field, modern Danobat equipment for threading, automated transportation lines, and coupling complexes increase productivity and ensure stable quality.
The quality control system has been strengthened with new Nordinkraft ultrasonic devices and Karl Deutsch magnetic particle flaw detectors, enabling precise diagnostics. The modernization creates an energy-efficient, sustainable production environment, reducing energy consumption, minimizing raw material losses, and ensuring consistent product quality. Automated control systems provide precise process monitoring.
The installation of a wastewater treatment plant in the coupling zinc-coating area reflects the company’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact and adhering to sustainable development principles. Production capacity has doubled to 60,000 tons, with production in new size ranges up to 245 mm in diameter and 20 mm in wall thickness. Serial production of new product classes, including P110, has been mastered. Personnel training with modern equipment has increased the overall qualification level of employees.
The completion of the first phase of Azerboru modernization demonstrates BSC’s ability to build a sustainable development model based on technological solutions, international partnerships, and strategic vision. The company plans to continue developing production capabilities, expanding its product range, and enhancing quality, solidifying its role as a leading player in Azerbaijan’s metallurgical sector and a reliable global supplier.
