Baku: 'During my time here, the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan have worked together through this complex geopolitical landscape to strengthen our mutual security and prosperity,' British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld said at a farewell meeting, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Ambassador Auld announced a significant development in August 2025, when the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan agreed to elevate their relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership. This partnership is a testament to the potential for further development in their already deep and trusting relationship. It is founded on three main pillars: defense and security, trade and investment, and innovation and education.
Auld shared some of his most memorable experiences during his tenure, highlighting his visits to Garabagh and East Zangezur. Last year, he accompanied the British Chamber of Commerce to Shusha and Lachin, witnessing new developments and optimism with each visit. He expressed pride in the involvement of British companies in these initiatives. Chapman Taylor is contributing world-class design and planning expertise in Garabagh, Baku, and now Nakhchivan. Meanwhile, bp's 'Shafag' solar power plant project in Jabrayil is generating clean energy and jobs, aiding in the decarbonization of the Sangachal terminal.
Ambassador Auld emphasized the critical role of mine clearance activities in Garabagh's development, acknowledging the direct contributions of British mine action companies and NGOs, supported through government programs. Since 2022, the UK has led international efforts in this area, marking it as one of the embassy's most significant undertakings. Auld recounted his memorable encounters with mine detection dogs and rats in Aghdam and Jabrayil and highlighted the active support for women's involvement in national mine clearance teams.
