Baku: The European Union (EU) must strengthen its competitiveness, reinforce its economic foundations, and assume greater responsibility in the field of security, stated former President of the European Council Charles Michel during a panel discussion at the Global Baku Forum held in Baku. APA reports that Michel emphasized the changing dynamics of the EU's strategic alliance with the United States, urging Europe to make more independent decisions.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Michel pointed out that the foundational principles of the EU-peace, democracy, and international law-are currently under pressure from various sides. He highlighted the significant geopolitical challenges posed by the war in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East, which threaten the values of international law, democratic principles, and human dignity.
Michel expressed concern over the rise of 'double standards' in international relations, which he believes undermine international law and the global order's foundations. He emphasized the need for the EU to take decisive action in three key areas moving forward.
The first area involves strengthening Europe's competitiveness and economic development by reducing excessive regulations that hinder innovation. Michel stressed the importance of enhancing the EU's security and defense capabilities as the second area of focus, noting that strengthening Europe's defense potential has become an urgent matter.
Finally, he identified the diversification of global economic ties and supply chains as the third area of focus, marking the end of Europe's reliance on Russian energy resources and cheap production chains. Michel concluded by acknowledging the changing nature of the EU's strategic alliance with the United States, which necessitates more independent decision-making by Europe.
