Baku: On July 3, the Baku Court of Appeals continued the hearing of appeals filed by Armenian nationals, including Arayik Harutyunyan, Arkadi Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, Davit Ishkhanyan, David Babayan, and Levon Mnatsakanyan. These individuals were previously convicted by the Baku Military Court for crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, and other serious offenses related to Armenia's military actions against Azerbaijan, as reported by APA.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the appeal hearing was headed by Judge Elmar Rahimov, with Judges Emin Mehdiyev and Mehriban Garayeva on the panel. The appellants were provided with interpretation services and legal counsel to ensure their right to defense. Representatives from the victims and the state prosecution, including Abbas Abbasli, Anar Alakbarov, and Sevinj Gasimova, were present.
During the proceedings, it was announced that defendant Davit Ishkhanyan had submitted written comments on the court session minutes. These comments were translated, distributed to relevant parties, and added to the case file. The state prosecutors emphasized the necessity of reviewing these comments under Article 51.7 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and requested the court to rule according to the law.
The victims' representatives expressed support for the prosecution's stance on the written comments. After deliberation, the judicial panel decided to include Ishkhanyan's comments in the case file, noting no inconsistencies in the minutes but considering the inclusion lawful and justified.
Defendant Levon Mnatsakanyan indicated his intent to submit a motion, which the presiding judge assured would be accommodated. Davit Ishkhanyan expressed gratitude for the court's decision and reiterated his innocence. David Babayan's defense counsel argued for his acquittal, claiming his appeal was fully justified.
Following a recess, Ishkhanyan's motion was communicated through his counsel. Babayan also declared his innocence regarding the charges. The next hearing is set for July 7.
According to the verdict by the Baku Military Court on February 5, 2026, several defendants, including Harutyunyan and Mnatsakanyan, received life sentences, while others received sentences ranging from 15 to 20 years.
