Electricity Exchange to Enhance Azerbaijan-Turkey Relations Through Nakhchivan Trade

BAKU: The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan is set to engage in a strategic electricity exchange with Turkey, a move anticipated to strengthen bilateral ties. Tural Murtuzaliyev, Deputy Head of the State Energy Service of Nakhchivan, disclosed plans to export electricity from Nakhchivan to Turkey, emphasizing ongoing efforts to facilitate this energy trade.

According to Trend News Agency, discussions regarding the technical and logistical aspects of the electricity exchange have been ongoing since the establishment of a working group on August 3, 2021. This group, comprising representatives from both Azerbaijan and Turkey, has met on various occasions to address the potential for electricity trade. Key topics in these meetings included the application of transformer and distribution substations, the condition of transmission lines, the location of meters, and the relay protection system. Additionally, considerations involving the Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEIAS) services and th
e mutual documentation required for the impending “Operational Agreement” have been discussed.

Murtuzaliyev further announced that the signing of the “Operational Agreement” between the two nations is imminent. The European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO) has sanctioned the export of 75 megawatts of electricity, conditional upon Turkey operating in a passive island mode, and the import of 40 megawatts, with Nakhchivan also in a passive island mode. This arrangement is poised to facilitate a balanced energy exchange, fostering greater cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey.
