Minister Declares No Water Scarcity Problem in Azerbaijan

Baku: Azerbaijan does not face a water scarcity problem, Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov asserted during a panel discussion at the 'Modern Agricultural Cooperation as the Foundation of Sustainable Development and Guarantee of Food Security' conference held in Baku.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the minister highlighted that agriculture contributes approximately 5-6% to Azerbaijan's GDP and employs over 25% of the workforce. Mammadov emphasized the dual economic and social significance of agriculture, stating that policy development for the sector must consider these aspects.

Mammadov acknowledged climate-related challenges and regional security issues affecting agriculture, particularly mentioning the Gulf region and Ukraine. Despite receiving 70% of water resources from abroad, he argued that Azerbaijan's water issues stem from management rather than scarcity. Steps are being taken to address these challenges, including creating water reservoirs and establishing collection systems.

The minister elaborated on initiatives to improve water management, such as transitioning from open, earthen canals to concrete and closed systems, including pipelines. These projects are extensive and being implemented nationwide to ensure efficient water use and distribution.
