Baku: 'The UN cannot solve global problems without the political will of its member states,' Miroslav Lajc¡k, President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, asserted during a panel discussion at the 13th Global Baku Forum, APA reports. He stressed that while criticism of the UN has grown in recent years, much of it lacks fairness. He reminded that the UN is not a global governing body and is dependent on the mandates provided by its member states.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Lajc¡k highlighted that increased political will from member states would enhance the UN's operational effectiveness. He argued that it is inappropriate to hold the organization accountable for all global problems, given its role as a platform rather than an independent entity.
Lajc¡k further pointed out that the current power structure of the UN does not align with today's global dynamics. He mentioned that emerging powers and regions lack proper representation and criticized the occasional misuse of veto power.
He emphasized that reforms are necessary and should be initiated by member states within the UN General Assembly, where all 193 member states are represented. Lajc¡k concluded by stating that the present moment is opportune for reform and that the focus should be on adapting the UN to meet modern challenges.
