Baku: Since the commencement of development at the “Oil Rocks” field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, a total of 181.2 million tons of oil have been produced, as of April 1, 2025, SOCAR reported to APA-Economics.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the field has also yielded 14.2 billion cubic meters of associated gas during the same period. A total of 1983 wells have been drilled in the area, with 430 currently active in the exploitation well fund.
The historical significance of “Oil Rocks” dates back to November 7, 1949, when oil first gushed from a well drilled there, marking the inception of offshore oil production globally. The field holds a place in the “Guinness Book of Records” as the first offshore platform in open sea.
Development of the field, which spans 12 km in length and 6 km in width, began in 1951 and is managed by the Neft Dashlari OGPD under SOCAR’s Azneft Production Union. The site features over 180 km of trestle bridges, more than 320 production platforms, and extensive networks of oil, gas, and water pipelines.
Approximately 70% of SOCAR’s annual oil and gas production that is delivered to shore originates from “Oil Rocks.”
