Baku: Israel’s President Isaac Herzog announced on Tuesday that he will represent Israel at this year’s United Nations climate conference, COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Herzog shared this information during a meeting with the Israeli delegation at the President’s Residence, emphasizing the significance of addressing climate change and fostering regional cooperation amidst geopolitical challenges.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, President Herzog’s attendance is scheduled for the second week of the conference, following his visit to the United States. He highlighted the urgency of passing a climate bill in Israel that would establish binding targets for reducing emissions contributing to global warming. Notably, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not expected to attend the conference in Baku.
President Herzog stressed the importance of proactive measures to combat climate change, particularly in a region where geopolitical tensions are high. He referred to the ‘axis of evil,’ a term used to describe Ira
n and its allies, as a pressing concern for Israel’s regional security. The climate bill, as advocated by Herzog, aims to commit Israel’s government to significant environmental targets, reflecting the global urgency of the climate crisis.
