ASHGABAT: UNICEF has unveiled a new initiative focused on sustainable water management at the UN Building in Turkmenistan, aiming to dramatically reduce water consumption and enhance environmental sustainability.
According to Trend News Agency, the initiative is designed to lower freshwater usage through the implementation of an advanced wastewater pumping and treatment system. This system is expected to decrease water use by 50 percent during the summer months and up to 90 percent in winter by recycling treated wastewater for irrigation and other purposes.
The United Nations has reported that traditionally, the irrigation of its territories in Turkmenistan consumes between 14,000 to 17,000 liters of water annually. The introduction of this new system will not only conserve water but also slash water-related costs by up to 72 percent each year.
UNICEF’s Chief Administrative Officer in Turkmenistan, Boris Ter-Semyonov, emphasized the broader implications of the initiative. “The world is facing growing clima
te challenges that affect Turkmenistan as well. This project demonstrates the potential for sustainable practices. It is a small initiative with far-reaching effects. We are not just saving water – we are investing in a green future,” he stated.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to combat climate change and promote sustainability in resource management, indicating a significant shift towards environmentally friendly practices in Turkmenistan.
