Iran-Azerbaijan Power Grid Expansion Planned for Next Summer


TEHRAN: The electrical network between Iran and Azerbaijan is set to be expanded by next summer, according to Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi. This announcement was made during a recent meeting in Tehran with Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev.

According to Trend News Agency, Aliabadi highlighted ongoing projects aimed at strengthening the cooperation in the electricity sector between the two countries. He also mentioned a proposal to connect the electrical networks of Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, which has been discussed with Russian officials. The next meeting on this matter will further focus on the potential economic benefits for Azerbaijan and Iran.

Aliabadi detailed the progress on the Giz Galasi and Ordubad hydrosystems, noting that a thorough program is underway with some enhancements already being implemented. The two countries have agreed to accelerate these initiatives, and technical issues and inspection plans were discussed.

He noted the established electrical connections at five points between the two nations and an agreement to further explore this cooperation. The synchronization of power grids between Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia was also discussed, with a decision to conduct a technical and economic evaluation by an Iranian company.
