Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Discusses Cooperation and Regional Stability with UN Secretary-General

BAKU—In a pivotal meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Azerbaijan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, emphasized the nation’s ongoing collaboration with the United Nations amid preparations for a major climate conference and efforts to stabilize the post-conflict regional environment.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the discussions took place on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, centering on Azerbaijan's active role in the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), and the current dynamics in the region following recent conflicts.

Minister Bayramov outlined Azerbaijan’s commitment to its cooperation with the UN and various specialized agencies, noting the significance of this partnership for the successful leadership of the COP29. He detailed priority areas and initiatives of the COP29 Presidency, particularly highlighting ongoing efforts to establish a new, collective quantified goal on climate finance, aimed at fostering more substantial and effective global climate action.

Additionally, the meeting covered the crucial post-conflict recovery and reconciliation processes in the region, focusing on restoration projects and the repatriation of internally displaced persons. Discussions also touched upon the normalization of relations with Armenia, with Bayramov pointing out the constitutional and legislative hurdles in Armenia that impede the peace treaty process despite progress in bilateral negotiations.

The dialogue between Bayramov and Guterres reflects a concerted effort by Azerbaijan to advance its international agenda and contribute to regional stability and environmental sustainability.
