Housing Policy Crucial for Economic Stability, Says UN-Habitat Executive Director

Rossbach: Housing policy plays an important role in restoring economic stability: 'Housing is the intersection point of many systems," UN-Habitat Executive Director Anaclaudia Rossbach said during a panel discussion held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rossbach stated that it is not correct to approach housing policy only from a social dimension, because important factors such as ecology, urban planning, and land management also play a role here. She highlighted that housing is located at the intersection of many different systems and, while it can be viewed from a social perspective, there is also an environmental dimension that should be considered. Attention needs to be paid to where and how construction is carried out.

The speaker emphasized the importance of urban planning and the proper functioning of urban systems as integral parts of housing policy. She noted that the way urban plans and systems work is crucial for housing, citing the land issue as being of critical importance. Rossbach underscored that strong political will and leadership are necessary for successfully resolving such large-scale and complex issues. She pointed out the need for leadership at the highest level, without which achieving goals becomes impossible.

Rossbach also drew attention to historical experiences, asserting that housing policy has been a central factor in lifting societies out of poverty and recovering from wars and crises. She reflected on history, observing that during periods when large population groups were elevated from poverty or when recovery efforts were made post-conflicts and crises, housing served as a main entry point. She recalled the example of post-war Europe, emphasizing that housing policy played an important role in restoring social and economic stability.
