Special Representative Reveals Destruction of Khankendi Cemetery During Occupation

Khankendi: Elchin Yusubov, the Special Representative of the President in Khankendi city and the Aghdara and Khojaly districts, disclosed the complete destruction of the Khankendi cemetery during a recent event. The revelation was made at the 'Post-Conflict Urban Planning: Restoring Destroyed Identity and Rebuilding an Integrated Future' event, part of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum, held at the Azerbaijan pavilion.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Yusubov highlighted the extensive damage inflicted on cultural monuments in Aghdara, Khankendi, and Khojaly during the occupation period. He noted that visitors had witnessed the destruction firsthand. The Malibeyli mosque was cited as the only religious site left in an unfinished state in these areas. Yusubov emphasized that most monuments had vanished, and the Khankendi cemetery was entirely erased.

Yusubov further explained that cities and villages were left in ruins, with remaining structures being unfinished buildings from three decades ago. He noted that, aside from a few villas and private buildings, the urban landscape lacked infrastructure, apart from what was constructed in the 1950s with Azerbaijani state funds. He pointed out that no investment was made in these territories during the 30 years of occupation. Following the liberation of these areas, the first step was to conduct inventory work to assess the damage.
