BAKU — A delegation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is conducting a crucial technical mission in Baku, Azerbaijan, to appraise the city’s readiness to host the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) this November.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the team arrived on September 6 for a three-day assessment of the extensive preparations for the conference scheduled from November 11 to 22. Mr. Wasim Mir, Director of Conference Affairs at UNFCCC, and Narmin Jarchalova, Chair of the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company and Chief Operating Officer for COP29, discussed several key operational aspects, including the zoning of the event venue and various other organizational matters.
Chief Kevin O’Hanlon of the UN Department of Safety and Security also met with officials from the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company to review the security measures in place for the upcoming high-profile international event. The mission toured Baku Stadium, the main venue for the conference, to observe both the completed and ongoing construction and operational preparations.
On their second day, the UNFCCC mission participated in a briefing organized for the diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan, focusing on the conference preparations and specific plans for the event. The visit also includes meetings with key department heads of the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company and representatives from various state agencies to cover all aspects of the conference preparations.
Additionally, the delegation will inspect accommodation, catering, and transport facilities across Baku to ensure they meet the standards required for the large number of delegates expected. This includes reviews of hotels and residential arrangements as well as catering services to be provided during the conference.
